虹橋（Hongqiao）駅から地下鉄2号線に乗れば、静安寺駅まで直通です。ホテルは出口からわずか100メートルの距離にあり、重い荷物を引きずって遠回りする必要もありません。複合施設「Paramount Metropolis（百楽門都会）」の12階に位置しているため、地上階の混雑を避けて移動できます。専用エレベーターでレセプションへ直行でき、チェックインもわずか3分で完了します。スタッフは事前に私の会議の予定を把握しており、静かな内向きの部屋をあらかじめ用意してくれていました。「明日はオンライン会議のご予定があるとのことですので、通りから離れたこのお部屋なら、交通騒音に邪魔されることなく過ごせますよ」という心遣いには感銘を受けました。
部屋に足を踏み入れると、そこがビジネス旅行者のニーズを完璧に満たしていることをすぐに実感しました。窓際に置かれた広々とした無垢材のデスクは、3つのプロジェクト提案書と2台のノートパソコンを同時に広げても十分なスペースがあります。ヴィンテージ調のデスクランプと天井照明の組み合わせにより、作業エリア全体が明るく保たれ、提携に関するプレゼンテーションの準備で深夜まで作業しても目が疲れにくい環境でした。デスク横のコンセント配置も非常に気が利いています。LANポート、Type-C急速充電ポート、USBポートが整然と並んでおり、部屋のあちこちを探し回って充電ケーブルを伸ばす手間がありません。その場でポータブルプリンターを接続してセットアップすることさえ可能でした。防音性能も期待以上でした。南京西路という主要幹線道路のすぐそばにありながら、ドアを閉めれば外の騒音はほとんど遮断され、2時間に及ぶオンライン会議も一度も邪魔されることなく行うことができました。何よりも驚かされたのは、ホテルの充実したビジネス設備でした。2階の多目的会議室の設備は完璧に整備されており、HDプロジェクターやワイヤレスマイクもすぐに使える状態で用意されていました。急遽、プロジェクトの資料を20部以上印刷する必要が生じた際も、ビジネスセンターのスタッフがわずか10分で、きれいに揃えて製本まで仕上げてくれました。ホテルのラウンジでのクライアントとの打ち合わせも快適そのものでした。温かみのある照明とヴィンテージの革製ソファが配された空間は、ビジネス街の喧騒とは無縁の落ち着きに満ちていました。淹れたてのコーヒーが湯気を立てて運ばれてくる中、打ち合わせを終えたクライアントは笑顔でこう言いました。「オフィスビルで話すよりも、ここではずっとリラックスして、心地よく仕事の話ができますね」と。
3日間の滞在中、出張につきものの緊張感を感じることは一度もありませんでした。その日の打ち合わせを終えた後、静安寺（ジンアン・スー）まで心地よい散歩（徒歩5分）を楽しみました。時には、階下の「パラマウント・ボールルーム（百楽門）」から流れてくるクラシック・ジャズの音色が聞こえてくることもあり、夕風に吹かれながら一日の疲れを癒やすことができました。以前は出張といえばビジネス街のチェーンホテルに泊まるものだと思っていましたが、Paramount Gallery Hotel Shanghaiでの滞在を通じて、上海の中心部であっても、アポイントの合間に慌ただしく動き回って疲弊する必要はないのだと気づかされました。効率的に仕事をこなしつつ、古き良き上海のゆったりとした時間の流れを味わうことで、慌ただしくなりがちな出張を、リラックスした上質な体験へと変えることができるのです。次に静安エリアで仕事をする機会があれば、間違いなくまたこのホテルに泊まるつもりです。
静安寺の傍らで、古き良き上海の夢に浸る
古き良き上海の魅力に惹かれる旅人として、今回の旅では流行の川沿いのホテルを避け、南京西路1728番地、あの「百楽門（パラマウント・ボールルーム）」の真上に位置する「Paramount Gallery Hotel Shanghai」に2泊することにしました。「パラマウント」という名が持つノスタルジーに惹かれて選んだホテルでしたが、その体験は期待を遥かに超える素晴らしいものでした。おかげで、混雑するSNS映えスポットを慌ただしく巡るという私の悪い癖も治り、上海を訪れる際の「定宿リスト」にこのホテルを迷わず加えることになりました。
チェックインした瞬間から、そこはヴィンテージな雰囲気に満ちていました。フロントの上海出身の女性は、地元の言葉特有の柔らかく美しい響きで私を迎え入れ、キーカードを渡す際にそっと手書きのメモを添えてくれました。「今夜、階下のパラマウントでヴィンテージ・ジャズの公演があります。宿泊客専用の入り口がありますので、行列に並ぶ必要はありませんよ」。レトロな柄のカーペットが敷かれ、1930年代のパラマウントの写真を飾った廊下を歩くと、濃い木目のドア枠に設置されたガラス製ウォールランプが温かな光を放っていました。ドアノブにさえ金色の装飾が施され、現代のホテルにありがちな無機質で冷たい均一感とは無縁の空間でした。一歩進むごとに、まるで過去の大切なひとときの中へと足を踏み入れているような感覚を覚えました。
静安寺を望む客室のドアを開けた瞬間、その光景に目を奪われました。床から天井まで届く大きな窓が、静安寺の金色の屋根をまるで一枚の絵画のように切り取っていたのです。わずか数百メートル先にある黄金の頂が陽光を浴びて輝き、寺の入り口から立ち上るお香の煙さえもはっきりと見えました。2024年に改装されたばかりの室内には、古い建物特有の古びた匂いなど微塵も感じられません。窓辺にはヴィンテージ調のベルベットのソファが置かれ、その横の小さなサイドテーブルには、ウェルカムドリンクとして「オールド・上海」スタイルのジャスミンティーが用意されていました。ソファに身を預け、お茶を淹れていると、階下のボールルームからジャズの調べがかすかに漂ってきました。それはまるで、1930年代の上海と本当に出会ったかのような、儚くも夢見心地なひとときでした。普段、寝る場所にはこだわりが強い私ですが、ここの寝具はまさに理想的でした。ふかふかの羽毛布団に包まれ、外の古い路地からかすかに聞こえる自転車のベルの音をBGMに、夜はぐっすりと眠ることができました。慣れないホテルでいつも悩まされる不眠に苦しむことも全くありませんでした。
何と言っても最高だったのは、その「没入感」のある体験です。階下のすぐ近くには「パラマウント・ボールルーム（百楽門）」がありました。混雑を避け、ルームキーを使って専用入り口から中に入り、往年のジャズを楽しむことができたのです。静安寺までは徒歩3分、歴史ある洋館が並ぶ愚園路（ユイユアン・ルー）へも、のんびりと歩いて10分ほどの距離でした。毎晩、プラタナスの並木が作る木陰の下、南京西路をゆっくりと散歩しました。ただ目的地へ向かうだけの何気ない移動さえも、心地よいひとときへと変わりました。夜遅くに戻ると、ドアマンが笑顔で温かい麦茶を差し出してくれました。「南京西路の夜風は冷えるので、温かい飲み物でほっと一息ついてください」という心遣いと共に。
2泊の滞在中、SNSで話題のスポットを「制覇」したり、混雑する観光地をかき分けたりするような、ありきたりな旅の予定からは完全に離れて過ごしました。朝は窓から静安寺の黄金の屋根に降り注ぐ陽光を眺め、夕方は愚園路の古い路地を散策し、夜更けには階下のパラマウントでジャズに耳を傾ける。かつて私は、古き良き上海の魅力は古い映画の中にしかないと思っていました。しかし、パラマウントのすぐ上にあるこのホテルに滞在して、その考えは変わりました。わざわざ懐かしい名所を探し回る必要などないのです。チェックインしたその瞬間から、古き良き上海の穏やかで夢のような雰囲気に包まれているのですから。次に訪れるときも、真っ先にこのホテルを予約するつもりです。
